Gift of Life
THE GIFT OF LIFE (By the Father of a Donor Son, who was called Anthony.) This is a Talk given to Doctors and Nursing Staff through out the UK and represents the collection of thoughts by the Donor Father at the time of his Son’s dying moments. Mostly we take life for granted. We expect to live a full span of years, some do. At some time or other during our lives we will each be touched by grief. Grief seems to be measured by the amount we have loved the person that has left us. I can see that you devote more than your profession. At times you devote yourselves, this caring attitude shines out and a bond, a trust, passes between staff and patient, also between the Staff and family. I felt this bond, and it was a comfort. I felt that if I could understand completely what was wrong with my Son I could perhaps find a solution - A life saving idea, something. Soon reality strikes and I realize all I can do is stand back and allow you to do your utmost to save my son. A cup of tea and in an armchair by his bed and then an encouragement to hold our loved ones hand, and an assurance that the tubes won’t fall out. It’s hard to carry on a one way conversation. There are so many things we wish we could say. Somehow we don’t want them to know there is so little chance. We look into the nurses and doctors faces looking for a glimmer of hope. We pray.... There are many other people sitting by a bed holding a loved one’s hand Waiting praying. Some of us will walk away alone with just a slip of paper and a plastic bag. It must be very difficult to ask the question? To ask the family if their son would be a donor? In a quiet room the silence was broken with more bad news, every time we came to this room we heard bad news. It is almost sure now that Anthony has sustained brain damage and can no longer sustain life for himself. There is a long silence. We are told about the Law and the legal requirements. I ask to be at the final test. I needed to be sure. We were told there was a difficult question to be asked. If Anthony was unable to sustain Life himself would he wish others to benefit from his death. They all stood round the bed. I sat with my GP’s arm around my shoulders, I watched in silence as each part was explained. I looked for just a tiny response. I squeezed Anthony’s hand, I willed with all my might. I thought there was something I did not see and perhaps the signs were there, so I looked up and there around me were people with tears in their eyes and I knew. The pain struck me and I felt as if my heart was torn and I bled. I walked back to my waiting family and words left me. We planted a tree for Anthony. Its in honor of his achievements. This little boy had shown an extraordinary interest during his life in bringing people together. He was always more for others than himself. He mixed with everyone. Always happy and hungry. He carried several Donor cards. He said it was a good idea. It was you and your skills that enabled Anthony to realize his wish and It made me proud of my son. It has given me an achievement after his death to focus on. I knew that all that could have been done was. Now the family had a time to say goodbye and to spend their moments alone with him, and his care continued with kindness. Then we left the hospital. The next day we visited Anthony in the Chapel of rest and there he lay at peace. He had given the greatest gift, the Gift of Life.
